Volunteering

There are many hands on ways in addition to fundraising activities that individuals may like to consider dedicating their time to.

Please note PHHWV does not have a refuge or sanctuary – therefore is reliant on members private properties to undertake the rescue and rehabilitation work of surrendered horses.  Given this PHHWV is unable to take on work experience students, or people for volunteer work due to liability issues.  Likewise we are unable to have people visit rescue horses.

PHHWV Educator

This is a newly developed program that has three levels.  The role of a PHHWV educator is to promote the organisation by presenting talks to people within the community.  This is a great way for people to get out there and highlight the issues surrounding equine welfare within Victoria.

To ensure the eductors are properly equipped there are minimum requirements that must be satisfied.  It is assumed that educators can work a laptop computer and projector and are confident with public speaking – Level one is usually small groups.

There is a standard PowerPoint presentation on CD provided to educators.

Representitives

A PHHWV Representative goes out and assesses suspected cases of equine neglect.  PHHWV representatives are required to have experience in handling horses and dealing with people.

The training provided to representatives covers what is equine neglect and how to address these issues with horse owners.

Depending on interest PHHWV runs two training days a year for people interested in becoming representatives.

You are not obligated to become a PHHWV Representative if after the training you think it is not for you.

Short Term Carers

A PHHWV Short Term Carer takes on the responsibility of the initial care for the surrendered horse or pony.

The training PHHWV provides has been developed based on 35 years of rescuing and rehabilitating horses.  The type of care that horses will need in this initial phase of their rehabilitation does vary from case to case and these issues are addressed.  Other areas covered include assessing the horse for suitability for Long Term Care.

Short Term Care can lasts for a minimum of six weeks to six months or even longer just depending on the horse in question.  PHHWV generally covers the cost of the initial six weeks of the care program.

To be a STC you need to have dedication and be in it for the long haul.  We do require carers to have their own property and suitable facilities e.g. small yards and or stables, smaller paddocks and be available during day to monitor the horse depending on it condition.

Depending on interest PHHWV runs two training days a year for people interested in becoming carers.

PHHWV Trainer

PHHWV replies solely on fundraising activities to fund its work.  When it comes to the breaking in, and assessment of horses for riding these costs can become very high.  If you run a business as a horse trainer and would like to donate your time to assist a PHHWV horse we would love to hear from you.  We have a register of names of people who have offered.  We try and spread this work around and limit it to one horse per year. You are under no obligation to take a horse  if you are called upon and you are busy.  PHHWV covers feed, feet and vet costs while horses are at the trainers.

We do have offers from people who are not running a business training horses – these offers are assessed on an individual basis as there are insurance issues to consider.
