Understanding the Australian Horse Industry: A Project Hope Perspective

In March 2024, the Australian Horse Industry Council (AHIC) commissioned a groundbreaking study to examine the size and scope of the Australian Equine Sector. For Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria, this represents a significant milestone in understanding the industry we serve.

This is the first comprehensive study of its kind to measure the full magnitude of the horse industry’s economic and social contribution across Australia. For our organization, dedicated to horse welfare throughout Victoria, this research provides crucial context for the challenges and opportunities we face in protecting and advocating for horses in our state.

The study’s findings will help Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria better understand:

  • The scale of the horse population we’re working to protect
  • The economic factors influencing horse welfare decisions
  • The breadth of stakeholders involved in equine care
  • The resources needed to address welfare challenges across different industry sectors

As advocates for horse welfare in Victoria, we recognize that evidence-based understanding of the industry’s scope is essential for developing effective welfare initiatives, targeting our resources where they’re most needed, and collaborating with industry partners to improve outcomes for horses across the state.

This landmark study provides Project Hope with the data foundation necessary to strengthen our welfare programs and advocacy efforts for Victorian horses.
